Lamp's second digital debate: New challenges for lighting

May 26 2020

After the successful first edition of the "Evolution and transformation of Architecture in a post-crisis society" round table that featured some of the most important Spanish architects of the current scene, which reflected on how the current pandemic will affect work, educational and health spaces; a second edition took place last week, this time with guests from Latin America who reflected on some of the trends discussed in the first debate, providing a more focused lighting vision.

Entitled "Evolution and transformation of Architecture in a post-crisis society. Lighting's New Challenges" (II), this second debate was attended by 280 registered people and featured interventions by:

  • Douglas Leonard: Lighting Designer, Director of DLLD studio and President of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD)
  • Juan Carlos Fabra: Lighting Architect-Consultant, Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism at the Republic of Uruguay University
  • Jorge Andres Gaitan: Architect and Lighting Designer, CEO Entreluz Estudio
  • Pablo Pizarro: Architect and Lighting Designer
  • Kai Diederichsen: Architect and Lighting Designer, General Manager and founding partner of Luz En Arquitectura

Some of the topics discussed were related to:

  • The opportunity to reappraise lighting, based on greater user awareness, as Douglas Leonard pointed out;
  • The importance of socio-cultural recovery, democratising good lighting, not only indoors but especially in homes;
  • Lighting evolution, from lighting design functionality to emotional recovery achieving the binomial: reconnection with nature and sensory effect restoration;
  • The regulatory challenges and the need to evolve and transform current regulations, enhancing the user experience in terms of usability beyond the energy approach, as Jorge Gaitán indicated;
  • Growing trend to consider lighting as a catalyst for well-being and impact on health, while there is an absence of unified and enforced metrics. Douglas called for lighting professionals to drive this transformation under an interdisciplinary approach;
  • Kai Diederischsen highlighted the need to incorporate sustainability with a holistic view not only in lighting, but also in the way spaces are conceived, integrating aspects of local materials and ecodesign practices, rethinking current models based on reuse and waste management.

At Lamp, we are working on preparing a third round table, this time with an international guest panel, featuring European, Middle Eastern and Asian speakers, which will be held in English. Date will be confirmed soon, so stay tuned to Lamp's social networks! We will keep you informed through these channels. See you next time!
