New lighting requirements focused on people's health

But what does photobiological risk mean?

The EN 62471 Standard on Photobiological Safety establishes a method for assessing the potential damage a lamp or luminaire may cause to the eyes or skin.

LED lights emit a high percentage of light in the blue spectrum, which may cause irreversible damage to the retina when staring at an intense light source for a long period of time. It is called the Blue Light Hazard.

EN 62471 determines 4 risk groups for the Blue Light Hazard:

• Risk group 0 ('exempt' group): Without risk, the light source does not pose any photobiological hazard.
• Risk group 1: Limited risk, direct exposure to the light source limited to 10,000 seconds
• Risk group 2: Direct exposure to the light source limited to 100 seconds
• Risk group 3: Direct exposure to the light source limited to 0.25 seconds

Our Kombic (100, 150, 200), Fil 70 and Fil 50, Fil 45 and Fil 35 (opal and opal comfort) and Plat families are classified within this 'Group 0', and are therefore completely exempt from photobiological risk. A total of 376 models comply with the maximum safety requirements in terms of people's health care.

It is extremely important to use this type of products in certain scenarios, such as when users are exposed to artificial lighting for a long time, in offices or universities, or in spaces where the main users are highly sensitive to light, as in classrooms and nurseries, or geriatric residences. In some countries, like Israel since 2016, such standards are mandatory.
